The TopGolf Experience

Updated: Mar 23, 2019

What is TopGolf?

It’s like if the bowling alley and putt putt golf had a baby but 10 times better in the experience department. Not only is TopGolf family friendly, it’s company friendly, couple’s friendly, and party friendly. Virtually any type of group, no matter the age, can come here and have fun.

TopGolf is essentially for everyone! You don’t have to know how to golf. You simply grab a golfing club, get a ball and swing! Hopefully you’re aiming for one of the targets out on the field. You score points by hitting micro-chipped golf balls at giant dartboard-like targets on the field. The closer you get your ball to the center or ‘bullseye’, and the further the distance, the more points you can potentially earn. Did I mention the best part of it all!? The fun and games don’t stop there; you can even indulge in delicious food and drinks brought to you while you play. Every bay is assigned a server who you can order from just as if you were sitting down at a restaurant. Your server will come back and fill up your drinks and they’ll take any orders whenever you want.

What does a typical visit look like?

Alright, for my first-timers when you get to TopGolf just inside the front doors, off to the right, is the Guest Services front desk. You’ll either wait in line or if they’re not busy you’ll walk right up. The guest service personnel will ask if you’ve ever played before, if anyone in the group is left-handed (they have sets of clubs for that), and they’ll ask how many people are in the group. After that you’ll either be told there's a wait and then your name will be put on the list, or you’ll be told your at bay number x - it’s on the first, second, or third floor.

For my people who are waiting; they have a restaurant bar type of area that you can settle into. The restaurant has high top tables all around, and a few regular tables. Just seat yourself and a server will come and greet you. I’ve been there before, with an hour wait, and my group sat and ate while we watched people participate in karaoke that night. Your buzzer goes off and then you’re told where your bay is or you’re escorted there.

Okay, now you’re at your bay area. This area has seating for up to 8 players. Depending on where you’re at you’ll either have patio like furniture to sit at with a low coffee table to place your food and drinks, or you’ll have a high top table with bar stools. Someone from the staff will get you started. If you’re a first timer you will have to pay $5.00 for each new player to receive your membership card. The membership fees are added on to the total bill. After that the card is good until you lose it and have to replace it. Once everyone’s signed up the electronic scoring board will have a list of games available to play (I haven’t played any of them other than the regular suggested TopGolf game).

For now I can’t speak on those other game options.

As for the rest of the regular TopGolf game, unlike bowling where it automatically changes it from person to person you have to go and select your name before playing your turn. If it’s your turn what you’ll do is grab a golf club. There’s men and women versions available in your bay.

  • Step up to the green playing mat.

  • Waive your club over the black sensor in front of you and a microchipped ball will roll out.

  • Take the micro-chipped ball and place it on the rubber tee on the green mat....

  • AND SWING!!!!!

The staff recommends that each player just goes 5 times in a row. You’re given 20 balls for the whole game, but the good news is……. You can play as many games as you want! What you’re paying for is the time you spend at the bay. So if you manage to play 3 games inside of one hour or 1 game inside of one hour it’s the same price.

Honestly, what makes it vary with how many games you play is how many players you have. Clearly if you’ve got a lot of players it’ll take longer to get through one game versus if you have only 2 or 3 players. At max you are allowed 6 players that can play but you can have 8 people in the bay at one time. Let’s say your grandma is there just for the heck of it but she brought her 6 grandchildren. She can just sit back and watch them while all 6 of the kids play. Now I don’t know if there’s an age limit but I’m sure you can always call ahead and ask.

What’s the pricing structure looking like?

What TopGolf does is adds everything to a tab. Let’s say you’re at bay #224. If you order food or have to pay for new membership cards it’s all added under that one tab. If you decide to stay there for two hours the cost of the time you’re there is all under that one bill. At the end, the server will bring out one check and ask you how you want to split it. I’ve seen it done a few ways:

  • One person pays the whole thing and everyone else pays that persona back, normally cash app, actual cash, venmo, paypal, you name it.

  • Split the bill evenly among each other.

  • Breakdown what everyone bought whether it was the card, drinks, or food. And then split the cost of the actual bay evenly. If I spent $20 on food then I pay that plus what my cost for the bay was.

And that’s a wrap! I hope I’ve answered as many questions as possible here. I’ll update my post whenever new information comes to light for me. Feel free to comment below with your experience at TopGolf or with any questions you may have. I’m totally open to answering them.
